  • Instructor: Michelle
  • Readings: All readings and/or lectures that we discuss will be in Writing to Communicate 2: Paragraphs and Essays, 3rd edition, or WC2, and Barron's Writing for the TOEFL iBT, 3rd edition, or Barron's.
  • Homework: Short homework assignments will be given at each lesson and will be due 2 days before the next lesson so that I can critique them. I will comment on all assignments and return them to you via email. I will also be using some of your writings as examples for the class, but I will not include your names to protect your privacy. NOTE: All homework assignments MUST be turned in on time in order to be marked and discussed in the following class.

1 Introduce the basic academic essay. Discuss Chapter 5 of WC2, "The Thesis Statement," pp. 64-71. Assign homework for Lesson Two.
2 Discuss Chapters 6 and 7 of WC2, "Introductory and Concluding Paragraphs," pp. 76-96. Assign homework for Lesson Three.
3 Discuss selections from Chapter 8 of WC2, "Body Paragraphs," pp. 97-104. Assign homework for Lesson Four.
4 Go over student essays in detail. Discuss techniques and vocabulary for stating your particular opinion (for TOEFL iBT independent questions), with material from Barron's. Assign homework for Lesson Five.
5 Discuss techniques and vocabulary for comparing and contrasting (for TOEFL iBT integrated questions), with material from Barron's. Assign homework for Lesson Six.
6 Discuss what types of clauses and sentences are there and how they determine punctuation. Assign homework for Lesson Seven.
7 Continue the discussion on punctuation, focusing on the expressive capability of commas, semicolons, and colons. Assign homework for Lesson Eight.
8 Review course material. Discuss questions about material covered in the course.
